Are You Getting the Holiday Blues?

November30

It’s so common for people to get a bit low when winter steps in. It’s called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) or more commonly known as the Winter Blues. This year, because of the economic slump that has increased the unemployment rate, more people will be prone to this disorder and will find it difficult to be in a jolly, holiday mood.

I’m glad though that when I get these feelings, it’s easy enough to look at my photo keepsake box where I keep treasured photos of my family.  Any time that a bit of loneliness creeps within me, I take a peek on these photos and I feel so blessed all over again.

SAD has been called the Demon Beast of Winter, because of the way it destroys the happy mood that should be all over us as we approach the holidays.  Sometimes a simple change of lighting (through the use of light boxes) can perk your mood back but there are also times when the feeling of loneliness or depression becomes too overwhelming that antidepressant medications are necessary to get over SAD. Walking or other exercises can be helpful.

If you’re getting the winter holiday blues, don’t despair.. you’re not alone! But try to snap out of it by using a light box or by going outdoors and walking a few miles.
